Costumes, competitions and cool prizes: RCHK Book Week gets pages turning.

Did you notice all the people in costumes on the school campus last month? Were you asking yourself why all these people were dressed in strange outfits wandering about like they were trying to find something they’d lost?

From April 19 to April 22, RCHK celebrated reading with its annual Book Week event. The theme of this year’s Book Week was ‘One World Many Stories.’ The goal was to connect each other with stories and celebrate different languages and cultures. A range of activities were hosted throughout the week for everybody to participate in and enjoy. There was the reading marathon, virtual book fair, photo sharing of costumes, mapping your home language, family podcasts, live videos of world book day and scholastic schools, RCHK Authors, making guesses on how many books are in our library, Golden Ticket treasure hunt, dress-up day, and more!

A personal favourite was the Golden Ticket treasure hunt. All of RCHK’s intrepid explorers were out and about locating those golden tickets. Head of the LIRC Kim Wells made sure the hunt was not an easy feat: it took students days to find a ticket, but there were some awesome prizes for those who stayed persistent, such as Bookazine coupons.

Victoria Pang, a student from Year 9, particularly enjoyed finding the golden tickets with friends as “working together is more fun than doing it alone.”

Others were excited to get into their favourite book character costumes. Both primary and secondary students took part in the dress-up day. However, anticipating the teachers' costumes  was the most amusing part of the day.

Zanzi Falahati, another Year 9 student, said: “Book Week was great and my favourite was the treasure hunt; but I loved the costumes.”

There were several Waldo’s, the regular Potterheads in their different house colours, some unicorns and superheroes, as well as pirates, fairies, animals, Willy Wonkas, and more.

Young RCHK aspiring writers got to try out their skills and creativity at the RCHK Authors activity, where they wrote stories about a green dragon saving Hong Kong’s environment and reducing pollution. Students also joined in on the reading marathon by reading with friends, classmates, or families to connect with each other. However, the most exciting part for students was getting new books from Bookazine with an RCHK discount and filling their bookshelves with new thrilling stories!

Beyond that, what better way to round up Book Week than with a victory at the Hong Kong Battle of the Books (BoB) semi-finals. RCHK’s team beat Malvern College, Harrow International School, American School, and St Stephen’s College. They then went up against Sha Tin College for the final “battle” on May 18. This was the second time in RCHK’s history to be competing in the BoB finals.
