2026: A year of expectations
By Bethany Lam
2026 is a new year, and everyone is a bit older and (hopefully) wiser. Many exciting events are happening, like the 30th anniversary of Pokémon or the release of the new Spider-Man. Read on to find out what's happening.
First up, there are a lot of special anniversaries. The US is celebrating its semiquincentennial anniversary—250 years since the Declaration of Independence—which is a long time compared to the 15th birthday of The Muppets. Not only that, but Apple is reaching 50 this year while keeping its technology up to date. Lastly, it is both Sir David Attenborough’s and Marilyn Monroe's 100th birthdays.
Other than celebrating old things, get ready for new releases of many big franchises. From original movies to childhood favorites, 2026 has movies for everyone. During the summer, Disney will release the live-action Moana (July 10) and Toy Story 5 (June 19), bringing back memories and nostalgia. Additionally, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (November 20), Jumanji 3 (December 11), and Dune: Part Three (December 18) are scheduled to arrive. Lastly, my personal favorites, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31) and Avengers: Doomsday (December 18), will finally be released, no doubt adding more plot twists and digital graphics.
Speaking of digital, another great aspect to consider in 2026 is new technology. The US and China are racing to publish new self-driving cars, where people will be using them like a taxi or Uber—but without the driver. But that's nothing compared to the quantum computer IBM announced, which moves 100 million times faster than a normal computer. Last, but definitely not least, SpaceX will be launching the first Starships (fully reusable and carrying both cargo and crew) to Mars with the mission of gathering data.
Unfortunately, there seems to be no luck on planet Earth regarding animals. Scientists predict that many species will go extinct this year, including European eels, Cao-vit gibbons, Temminck's pangolins, Saker falcons, Clouded leopards, and so much more. However, scientists are also exploring cloning, genetic engineering, and traditional breeding to bring endangered species back.
There is also excitement for the Winter Olympics, which will be hosted in Italy, introducing a sport combining skiing and mountain climbing called "Skimo." On top of that, Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium will host the 2026 World Grand Prix for snooker, as well as the Rugby Sevens.
To round it up, 2026 will be an exciting year with many discoveries and events. Who knows what’ll happen? An alien invasion? Dancing sausages with top hats?
