The Clever Mouse in Our Kitchen

By Grace Lau

It all started on a quiet Sunday morning two weeks ago. When I went to the kitchen for breakfast, I was shocked to find tiny bite marks on our bread and cheese. I thought it might have been my little brother playing tricks, but then I noticed something more interesting - there were tiny footprints scattered across the kitchen counter!

During the next few days, our mysterious visitor became bolder. Every morning, we discovered new evidence of the mouse's midnight adventures. The clever little creature had somehow managed to climb up to our highest shelf, where Mom kept her special chocolate cookies. Not only did it eat the cookies, but it also left a trail of crumbs everywhere! The most surprising thing was finding that it had chewed through three plastic bags and eaten nearly half of our cereal boxes.

Mom wasn't very happy about our uninvited guest. She decided to take action and bought several different types of mousetraps. We tried the traditional cheese trap first, but our smart little friend somehow managed to steal the cheese without triggering the trap. Then we tried a more modern trap with peanut butter, but the mouse completely ignored it! It seemed to prefer our kitchen snacks instead.

The situation became quite amusing when Dad joined in the mouse-catching mission. He spent an entire evening setting up what he called his "master plan" - a complicated system of boxes and strings. The next morning, we found that the mouse had simply created a new path around all the traps. Dad couldn't believe it! Even our cat, Whiskers, couldn't catch this clever mouse.

After two weeks of failed attempts, we finally had to change our strategy. Mom bought several metal containers to store all our food, and we made sure to clean every crumb from the kitchen floor and counters each night. We also discovered a small hole behind the refrigerator and sealed it properly.

Gradually, the signs of our tiny visitor became less frequent. The footprints disappeared, and our food remained untouched. Sometimes I wonder where the clever mouse went. Maybe it found another kitchen to explore, or perhaps it decided that our newly organized kitchen wasn't as interesting anymore.
