Mr Moran's memorandum

By Daniel Cheung

Mr Moran is a widely known design teacher and newcomer to the RCHK community. We interviewed him with the intention to understand more about him through his words — but as you’ll read, it’s evident that “the music is not in the notes, but the silence in between.”

What was your first impression of RCHK?

RCHK first seemed a little overwhelming with the sheer size. However, I came to see that there is a great community, and it’s a great and fun place to work.

What is your most memorable memory at RCHK so far?

EOTC was a great experience; I spent it with the year 7’s, and my advisory made it a fun and memorable week.

What is the best and worst thing about being a teacher?

The best is the holidays. I joke! It’s when you guys, ‘the students’, achieve something you didn’t think you would, and I was there to guide and help you. Worse is definitely the marking!

What languages do you know? How did you learn those languages?

Unfortunately, I only speak English. I learnt a little Mandarin while I lived in China, but I needed more lessons to have a conversation. I highly recommend learning a second language while you are young.

If you could tell every student one thing, what would it be?

Try everything once; if you don’t like it, you don’t have to do it again.

Do you have any hobbies apart from teaching?

I love scuba diving, long-distance cycling and hiking/running.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I plan to set up my own side-line business in design.

What is a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?

I am a dog person; I have a dog called Zico, who is very spoiled.

Mr Moran chases Zico.
