Mr. Otto's last encore

Interview by Haven Lo

As it is now known, our dear head of the RCHK Music department Mr.Otto will not be returning in August after eight years in the school. While we each reflect on our personal memories with Mr.Otto, he has shared with us some final tidbits about himself and life advice he has for us.

So, who are you?

Cam Otto, I grew up living with Thai government exchange officials (a program my parents signed up for) and an Italian opera singer studying with a retired New York concert master living in our area.

What got you into music?

It’s all regarding the enjoyment of playing with other people. Sharing what is music.

Your name has now become synonymous with the saxophone, but did you play something else before that?

We had to learn clarinet before saxophone but I also played piano, though not very well.

What brought you to Hong Kong? What made you choose this city?

I was offered a number of international jobs. One in Shenzhen, one in Beijing, one in Bahrain, one in Cameroon and one in Hong Kong. I initially thought you can't be a Cameron in Cameroon and the other point was HK seemed to have more concerts.

Why did you choose to teach music?

I love music. Music is everything. Everyone can relate to it. I consume and enjoy it all. I listen to podcasts on music, documentaries, explore new softwares, seek out new sounds and talents. I love music.

Outside of music, what do you do?

Cycling, I used to be a bike mechanic. I love the outdoors and having two siblings working in physics and architecture, Science generally has been something I advocate for and appreciate.

What impressed you the most in RCHK?

The faculty and students. Being a new and young teacher, so many staff showed so much inspiration in education. You couldn't help but be caught up in giving your all. Students here are inspiring. They are all so talented and by collaborating with them outside of their comfort zone, such as seeing classical players playing jazz, you get to see professional musicians grow in front of you.

What advice do you have for students reading this?

Pursue your wildest dreams. Someone wrote those songs in your favourite movie, the piano player for Beyonce was once a student, and the most talented songwriter of time is yet to be you.

Any other remarks?

"Never doubt your journey, a light will reveal your path" No need to get deep. You're the light!
