Foxtober - This Year’s Run For Cancer
By Yaya Kao and Kate Wu
“When I started this run, I said that if we all gave one dollar, we’d have $22 million for cancer research, and I don’t care, man, there’s no reason that isn’t possible. No reason!” – Terry Fox
It was that time of the year again when we tightened our shoelaces for the Terry Fox Run! This beloved annual event took place on Friday, the 24th of October, bringing fun, fitness, and fundraising to RCHK in support of cancer research.
The History of the Run
In the 1980s, after losing his leg to cancer, young Canadian athlete and cancer researcher Terry Fox embarked on a cross-country run known as the “Marathon of Hope.” He aimed to run across Canada to raise awareness and funds, with a goal of raising one dollar for every Canadian. He was well on his way to achieving this when, unfortunately, as he closed in on Thunder Bay, the cancer spread to his lungs, and the marathon had to be stopped.
By then, the Marathon of Hope had already raised a total of 24 million dollars, reaching above and beyond his target and making a contribution to cancer research that will be remembered forever. Terry Fox passed away in June 1981, but his impact remained unforgettable; his courage and determination inspired millions, earning him the name “Canadian hero.” His legacy lives on through the yearly Terry Fox Run, which raises funds for cancer research in his honor.
The Run at RCHK
Terry's story uplifted many, including former cancer battler and RCHK teacher, Mr. Davies. Fifteen years ago, Mr. Davies wanted to share this unforgettable story with his students. He started the run in his Year 5 class. Just like Terry Fox, this started with one person and a goal; the students inspired each other, and what began as a small initiative quickly grew to include the entire Primary school, eventually reaching across the whole school.
This brings us to where we are today. Just this past Friday, RCHK students from Year One to Year Twelve, along with parents and teachers, gathered at the Ma On Shan Promenade to participate in this inspiring event. They ran a path inspired by the same spirit that drove Terry Fox to begin his legendary journey. Some ran 1 kilometer, while others took on the challenge of 6 kilometers, yet all ran for a shared purpose: raising funds for cancer research (and the promise of popcorn). Those who didn’t participate found other ways to encourage their friends, such as running stalls or cheering on the sidelines. It was an exciting experience for all, reminding us that we can make the world better, one run at a time.
Behind the Scenes
In an interview, Mr. James, one of the main organizers, explained who hosts the run annually.
“Many, many people help make the run go smoothly," Mr. James said. "From Dr. Brown, Ms. Anney Chan and the whole Admin department on the 5th floor, to the teachers, EAs, and staff, to Ms. Sally Liu and Sodexo, to Mr. Mortensen and the Red Door Center, it really is a whole school effort."
He added, "The chief organizers are myself, Ms. Pinky, Ms. Neetu, Ms. Lily, and the CAS committee of Year 12 students who meet every week to plan." Mr. James also noted some special supporters: "Hong Kong Paralympian Alison Yu is always a special guest. Ms. Utah Lee also always supports the event. This year, Dr. Chan, representing the local cancer research clinics, joined us.”
Voices from the Track
We gathered stories from a few students who participated. Many runners expressed how fulfilling it felt. "It’s for a good cause, but it’s so tiring," said a Year 8 student. Another participant shared, “It feels good to know I’m making a difference, even if it’s just a small one.”
When asked what it would mean to Terry Fox if he were here today, one student said: “I think it would mean a lot to him if he was here right now; he would know that he inspired so many people, and his determination reflected off so many others.” A Year 3 student added, “I think Terry would be super proud of all the people! It’s really nice that we’re doing this to remember him and help others!”
Stallkeepers also weighed in: “We love being part of the event because it shows how much everyone cares about helping others!” Another vendor shared, “It’s so great to see the RCHK community join together for The Terry Fox Run. Watching the community try their best and work together is truly inspiring.”
A Terry-ific Future
There are Terry Fox Runs all over the world, and in Hong Kong, a handful of schools—including RCHK—hold an annual run.
“Over the years, the event has grown bigger and bigger. Our goal is to one day have all primary and secondary staff coming together for this great cause,” said Mr. James.
In conclusion, this annual Foxtober Run brought the RCHK community together in a "Terry-ific" way. The combined efforts of students, parents, and teachers raised significant funds for cancer research and strengthened the school community. As we continue to honor Terry’s legacy, let’s keep running, raising funds, and spreading hope, reminding ourselves that every step counts in the fight against cancer.
