  1. The Mitchells VS The Machines (Watch For Free here)

Every family has its own weird quirks and problems, but the Mitchell family has definitely got a few more weird things going on than your own family. The main character, Katie Mitchell, is a talented movie director who cannot wait to leave her family. Her father, Rick has a history of fraught relationships with her, Katie’s mother Linda, is sometimes over-supportive to everyone in the family, and her brother Aaron, a dinosaur fan and emotionally awkward boy. After accidentally destroying Katie’s laptop the day before she leaves for film school in California, Rick decided to cancel Katie’s plane ticket and go on a road trip. During the road trip, a robot apocalypse changes everything with Pal, an AI created by Mark Bowman gone rogue. Along the way, you can see hilarious and touching interactions between the Mitchell family and two additional allies that you need to watch the movie to know who they are. This is a brilliant movie about family, love, and our over-reliance on technology.

2. Big City Greens (Watch Season One Here and Season Two Here)

Disney is no stranger to entertaining cartoons, from The Owl House (featured previously in Suggestions From A Nerd) to Ducktales (an excellent cartoon with a great plot and character development) and to Amphibia (an excellent show with Asian representation and lots of adventure). But Big City Greens creates adventure and fun in a non-traditional way, by detailing life in the city after moving from the countryside. This cartoon is both silly and entertaining at the same time. The main character, Cricket Green, moves to Big City with his autistic sister Tilly and his father Bill into his grandmother Alice Green’s home in the city. You can watch their interactions and hilarious actions with Cricket’s friend Remy, his co-worker, and friend Gloria, while at the same time facing the villain Chip Whistler. It is great for the nerds who need to chill out and have a good time.

3. Izzy Newton and the SMART Squad: Absolute Hero

This fiction book is an entertaining and fun read for the fiction-loving and non-fiction-loving nerds out there. The book has deep roots in scientific concepts, famous scientists, and critical thinking, and the five main characters have one part of STEM as their specialty. The story centres around Izzy Newton’s first days in Atom Middle School. With an old friend starting to ignore Izzy, challenging schoolwork, and an out-of-control thermostat, Izzy’s school life is pretty rough. But with the help of her friends, she is determined to solve the freezing school problem for the benefit of all. With cool characters and interesting storylines, get ready to nerd out after reading this book!

4. The Hill We Climb

During the inauguration of President Joe Biden, poet Amanda Gorman stole the show with her inspiring poem, now the moving poem is published as a book. Even though it is a short book, it is one of the best poems I have ever read. (and I’m a nerd who does not like poetry!) This poem is fitting to an era of history that is filled with darkness and depression, with words of wisdom and beauty. It gives readers hope, optimism and ambition to change the world for the better. This should is a must for nerds who want to feel better by reading!
